What Is a Sugar Glider?

Filed under: Animal Fun, Lifestyle Hub — admin at 12:32 pm on Monday, August 4, 2008

Sugar gliders are marvelous little pets that do not take up much space and are relatively easy to care for. They are not rodents as some mistakenly think, but rather marsupials from the same family as Kangaroos and Kola Bears. They are indigenous to Australia, Indonesia, and New Guinea and in the wild live in tight-knit, loving colonies. This is the aspect that makes them such wonderful household pets because the bond so completely with their new ‘colony’you and your family.

One of the most unique aspects of this curious little bundle of love, and where part of their name comes from, is the membrane of fur-covered skin that stretches from front to rear ankle on both sides of their bodies. This membrane flares out when they spread their arms and legs giving them a parachute type wingspan allowing them to glide from one place to another.

Sugar gliders have been known to be able to glide as much as 50 feet! They don’t fly like a bird by flapping ‘wings’, they simply spread their legs and let their ’sails’ carry them. It is exciting to play with your sugar glider as they jump and play and ‘glide’ about your house. You will find that they easily learn to recognize their name and come when called, and when they ‘come’ it will usually be with a great leap as they float across the room to you.

The ’sugar’ part of their name comes from their great love of sweets. Like many of us, sugar gliders have a real sweet tooth. Most of their sugar comes from the fruits and vegetables they so love to eat and that are such a vital part of their daily diet. Another interesting aspect of this delightful little pocket pet is that they have ‘hands’ rather than paws. They’re fingers work to hold food and other items much like our own complete with opposable thumbs for grasping. They are truly delightful and amazing pets that give their owners years of pleasure and enjoyment.

Firing up your outdoor fire pit

Filed under: Gardeners Shed, Lifestyle Hub — admin at 4:14 am on Tuesday, June 24, 2008

A frustrating task that must be done when cooking with an outdoor fire pit is getting the fire started. Normally you would start by loading the fire pit with wood and allow them to burn down to coals. This is a drawn out process that may take half a day or longer. Instead of wood some individuals may prefer to use charcoal, but it doesn’t require a lot of coals so most people stick with wood and besides wood is cheaper. You will need to burn enough wood to produce about a foot of coals to be most effective and efficient for cooking the meat.

There are other accelerators in the market, to startup your outdoor fire pit, either liquid or solid. It saves a lot of time using them, but there are some downsides. They are highly flammable so they should be handled with care, and also they must add some chemical taste to your cooking.

Before putting the meat in the pit it must be flavored. Some individuals like to flavor their meats with spicy rubs, paprika, salt/pepper/lemon rub, or barbecue sauces the preference is the cooks’. After flavoring the meat it is time to wrap it. When wrapping the meat you must decide what you want to use to wrap it with. There are several products that can be used for this step. Different items that can be used are aluminum foil, banana leaves or large leaves, and wet burlap material.

What is Philately Stamp Collecting

Filed under: Lifestyle Hub — admin at 11:53 pm on Tuesday, May 6, 2008

Philately, or the study of stamps, is a huge field of study that has captured the attention of many Americans over the years. This fascination with stamps and the history that surrounds them has led to a hobby related to philately, which is collecting stamps.

Usually, stamp collection begins with the acquisition of a first couple of stamps and the choice of a particular classification of stamps where the collector will concentrate his or her efforts on. The continued acquisition of the stamps for the collection is done either through personal letters, the postal office, trading with fellow collectors, or collectible stamp dealers, rare and high quality stamps under the chosen classification.

However, while it may seem that a philatelic hobby is far too difficult or obscure, it actually is not. The collection and study of stamps is not a completely novel idea; over 110 countries worldwide have a sort of society for philatelists (or stamp collectors and enthusiasts).

In the United States of America, philatelists banded together in the year 1886 under the umbrella of the American Philatelic Society (APS). For more than a century now, the APS provides its members not only an avenue to meet fellow enthusiasts, but also various services and informational programs to assist in the pursuit and enhancement of the collecting experience. Over this huge span of time, the APS has been kept alive by donations, sale of its various publications, receipt of payment for its services, and receipt of its members’ dues. The community of APS is not a small one that may be overlooked. In the country, there are more than 44, 000 philatelists formally part of the APS. There are many others who are new to the trade, or are yet to find their way to APS. This huge number is proven by the fact that various states hold annual philatelic conventions for enthusiasts in the area to meet and convene. Another philatelic association in the United States known equally for its expertise is the Philatelic Foundation.

Various classifications and concentrations of collection are available. Some of them include postage stamps from other countries (particularly those of age), postage stationery (including air letter sheets, government-issued post cards) that preceded the printing of the first stamp in the form we know today, revenue stamps, or first day cover stamps.

8 Steps To Successful Scrapbooking

Filed under: Lifestyle Hub — admin at 1:16 pm on Sunday, April 27, 2008

Looking for a beginner scrapbooking tip or two? Well how about 8
easy steps to a great scrapbooking experience? We have 8 easy
steps below to help you become a successful scrapbooker!

1. Commit - Remember all the reasons you started scrapbooking.
Set mini-goals and achieve them. Set a goal for every year and
work towards it by also committing to your budget.

2. Learn - talk to others, read magazines, browse websites to
learn about new resources. You may find that perfect paper for
your next project.

3. Stretch - Give yourself a push. Don’t get so comfortable with
your “get togethers” that you’re spending more time eating than
completing layouts.

4. Confidence - Don’t allow yourself to get overwhelmed. Stay
focused on your goals and you will gain more confidence in
yourself. As you gain more knowledge from reading, you will use
those ideas to your advantage.

5. Happy - Be happy with what you accomplish. You won’t get
everything finished in one night so celebrate! You worked hard,
so give yourself a nice pat on the back.

6. Scrappers Block - Don’t let any “scrappers block” get in your
way. Go back to the beginning, sell off old supplies. Take a
break for a couple of days, maybe just for an hour. Try creating
smaller aspects to your page instead of the page as a whole.
Working on borders and titles is a smaller task you can focus
on.

7. Organize - If you haven’t used something in the last 6
months, trade it away or sell it off. Make room for supplies you
need for the project you’re currently working on.

8. Enjoy - Relax and read over your pages. Invite your children
to look at it with you. Listen to some soft music and look back
at all you’ve accomplished.

Birthday Cards - Right Selection Is Important

Filed under: Lifestyle Hub — admin at 2:06 pm on Friday, April 18, 2008

All of us are becoming immune to the joy of birthdays. Unless it is our birthday, we show no interest in others to a great extent. Most of us have a list of friends and family members and on their birthday, we search the Internet, pick up an ecard and send it. Our duty is over. If by mistake, we miss the birthday, we will send a belated birthday wishes card. How do we expect to develop and maintain close relations with this kind of approach? Birthday cards can cement any relationship beyond imagination. Please use this occasion to do that. Every birthday comes only once a year. Don’t be sloppy on that day. Be alert and you will get great friends for life. Let us find out more about the magic of birthday cards.

Take the example of your birthday. You open your mailbox and find many ecards or cards sent to you. You begin clicking one after another. One card attract s you very much. After that all other cards for your birthday are forgotten except that one birthday card. Will you not remember the sender with great affection? Will you not love that person for his/her care in selecting a very good ecard and sending it to you? Will you not remember this card till your next birthday and look for the ecard sent by the same person first? That is the difference we make with small details and care.

Small things matter a lot. For us there is only our birthday that is important. For others it is their birthday. On that day, they feel joy. You have to add to that joy with your actions. Put little more effort in selecting the right birthday card and use it to enhance your bond. A small card can make a big difference. You will win a friend for your lifetime. Please pay attention to what others want, and you will get what you want from them.

The Magic of Santa Claus

The magic of Santa Claus By Rexanne Mancini

The magic of Santa is still alive in our home … Santa has
done such a great job reinforcing his presence all these years,
it’s no wonder. :-)

I know this will most likely be one of the last years, if not
the last year, my younger daughter still believes that Santa is
a jolly old fellow with a bushy beard who somehow gets his big
ol’ self down the chimney each year without fail. And flying
reindeer? Oh man … my heart aches thinking this tradition will
be short-lived in our home, although the spirit of Santa will
continue to fill the stockings and leave special presents for as
long as I’m around.

When my children were little, I actually had reservations about
starting the Santa fantasy … wondering if “lying” to my
babies, who I swore I would always be honest with, would come
back to haunt me. Somehow, this isn’t the same as outright
lying. It’s creating holiday magic and reveling in the joy that
fantasy brings to children. Santa is hope and love, Santa is joy
and Santa is a big part of what makes Christmas special.

On the page of my Christmas site “Is Santa Real?”, the author
explains that Santa is, in fact, very real and encouraging our
children to love and look forward to Santa’s yearly visit is
perfectly OK because what we are actually teaching them is the
art of giving and that acts of kindness, good will and
compassion are valuable characteristics to uphold and honor
throughout their lives.

Parents will eventually have to come clean and acknowledge that
there really isn’t a big ol’ jolly guy scraping himself raw by
dragging presents in a sack down chimneys every year. When the
time comes, try to remember what Santa Claus represents and let
your child know that his spirit will continue every Christmas,
no matter how old they become.

Allow kids the innocence of believing in Santa for as long as
they will. And while they still believe, make Santa as magical
and outrageously fantastical as you can. After all, the spirit
of Santa is what parenting is all about.

Buying Baby Clothes Online

Filed under: Lifestyle Hub — admin at 3:09 pm on Monday, March 31, 2008

Today’s parents have more options available to them when it comes to finding and purchasing clothes and other items for their babies than ever before. With the advent of the internet, shopping for baby clothes has never been easier as there are numerous online retailers that can provide almost anything a parent needs. What follows are some of the best web sites for buying baby clothes online.

Discount Baby Clothes

Not surprisingly, some of the best physical discount stores that carry baby clothes are also some of the best online retailers. When looking for baby duds at an acceptable price the kings online are Wal-Mart, Target, and Kmart. Each company offers direct sales from their web site, have pretty much everything you could need in terms of baby clothing and layette needs, and offer it all at prices that won’t make you spit up your Isomil formula. Each offers clearance items and baby registry services as well. Other good sites with slightly higher, but still mid-range, pricing belong to Old Navy and Land’s End.

Designer Baby Clothes

For the parent that wants to dress little Kelly or Clay with a bit more pizzazz and who doesn’t mind paying considerably more to do so there is E-Luxury, a site that offers the full line of Baby Dior products and the direct web sites of several other designers who deal in baby clothing. Baby Phat has their own site as does Anne Geddes who recently launched a line of her own baby wear based on her famous photographs. If you’re looking to shop for as much as possible under one electronic roof there is Chic Baby Boutique, who carries most of the Mak the Yak and Baby Om clothing lines.

Let Your Browser do the Walking

There are literally hundreds of other web sites out there that offer baby clothes at all price ranges and designed to meet all specifications. If you’re interested in organically grown cotton, there’s a site that specializes in baby clothing made from those fibers. If you want punk rock designs on your baby’s T-shirts, there are sites that offer just that! There are sites that offer political slogans on baby sized clothing, “alternative’ baby clothing, and sites for baby & toddler tuxedos and evening gowns. If you can imagine it, you can probably find it somewhere on the internet where there is someone just waiting to sell it to you.
