What is Travel Insurance?

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin at 11:21 am on Thursday, February 26, 2009

Many of us take out holiday insurance, but few know really what it is and how it can be defined. If you know what is included, you will be able to make the most of your protection.

In general terms, holiday insurance protects a traveller’s holiday costs against adverse events such as cancellation and interruption and also reimburses medical expenses, the loss or damage of property and transit delays. Travellers are compensated if they have to cancel or interrupt their travel, they will also be covered should they need emergency medical treatment, medical evacuation and other situations.

The main categories of holiday insurance:

Delays and cancellation - including curtailment

Delay: This reimburses travellers for hotel, food or clothing expenses in the event of a flight delay. Some plans also cover costs associated with catching up with a cruise should another delay cause the traveller to miss embarkation.

Cancellation: Reimbursement comes into effect if travellers have booked and paid for a holiday, but are unable to embark because of personal illness or injury, death (of the individual or of a family member), adverse weather conditions, airline strikes, terrorism, bankruptcy, sudden unemployment, jury duty or by sustaining serious damage to their home causing it to be uninhabitable due to fire or flooding.

Interruption: Insurance companies pay money to policy holders abroad if they have to cut short their trip due to illness, death (of the traveller or a family member), weather, airline strikes, terrorism, bankruptcy, becoming unemployed, and other adverse conditions which mean that, due to events outside the control of the holiday-maker, a trip has to be curtailed.

Medical reasons

Medical and health reasons: Reimburses medical and emergency dental costs. Almost all holiday insurance plans work by reimbursing the traveller after they have paid locally for treatment. Claims are usually paid within 7 - 10 days. Pre-existing conditions are covered by most policies if the policy is purchased within (at the most) 21 days from the date the traveller made the first payment or deposit.

Medical evacuation: This provides emergency transportation to either a local hospital in the event that the traveller is unable to get there by themselves or back to a hospital near the traveller’s place of residence. If family members are covered on the same policy they can return home also.

Death of traveller

Air Flight accident - this covers death or dismemberment during an air flight only. Usually provides the highest amount of coverage due to fairly low likelihood of this occurring.

Common carrier - Covers death or dismemberment while travelling on public transport such as a plane, ferry, train bus or taxi.

Accidental death - covers death or dismemberment at any time of your trip. Usually provides the lowest amount of coverage due to a higher risk

Loss or damage of personal effects

Baggage loss - reimburses travellers for lost, stolen or damaged personal items. This coverage is usually restricted to the duration of the trip and not confined to baggage damaged or lost by the airline. There are two policy limits, total claim and per item maximum. Some policies also place limits on the type of items that can be claimed for - such as precious jewellery, laptops and sporting goods

Rental Car damage - Reimburses travellers for damage or loss to a rental vehicle. It is designed to allow the traveller to decline collision damage waiver (CDW) coverage offered by the car rental companies. Liability coverage should still be purchased through the car rental company. Rental Car Damage coverage is also often included with the credit card used to pay for the car rental which is often matches the coverage provided in the policy.

Assistance services - provides a 24-hour collect telephonel advice and assistance service to travellers. This service can be used anytime a traveller needs advice. Make sure you don’t leave home without it.

In conclusion

holiday insurance is the one product in the modern insurance-saturated world that really is essential. You will not regret taking it out, but not being insured for your travel mishaps is a source of huge regret for far too many holiday-makers every year.

Don’t leave home without your toothbrush, a sketch pad, a bar of scented soap and a holiday insurance policy!

Where To Find Cheap Health Insurance

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin at 10:43 am on Thursday, February 26, 2009

Health insurance costs are rising all the time. Many people feel they cannot afford health insurance. Others feel that they don’t need it because they are healthy and have never had any major medical problems. This is definitely faulty thinking on their part. As a matter of fact, you do need health insurance, and there are a lot of ways to get affordable health insurance for yourself or your family. Health insurance is protection against the possible health problems that could happen in the future, and you have absolutely no way of knowing what those might be.

For people who are low income, every state has a Medicaid program that they could possible qualify for. The requirements vary form state to state, but all it takes is a trip to your local Division of Family Services office to get an application. You might be surprised at the number of people who would actually qualify for this service that don’t think that they would. You will need to fill out the application and provide some documentation about your finances. This program can cover the health insurance needs of the entire family, including dental work, eye care, doctor visits, emergency care, prescriptions and more. For people with children who don’t get insurance through their work, this is a very good option to check out. It is free and a fairly painless process, and if you qualify, it could make you like a lot easier.

Another option for cheap health insurance is to look on the Internet. There are a ton of companies that offer all types of health insurance plans, and it is very possible that you could find one that is perfect for your family and fits your pocketbook. The costs vary, so do plenty of research before choosing one or another. It is a smart idea to find out how long the company has been in business, and what kind of reputation they have. Ask for a quote from several sources, and see what kind of a deal they can get for you. Make sure they are also licensed in your state, because it does no good to get insurance if they can’t operate in your state.

Still other options include your local insurance agencies. Ask around to find out about the different agents and their policies. Many agents will work very hard to get you an affordable health insurance plan for your family at a cost you can live with. Even if you can’t get every type of coverage you want, some is better than none.

Follow up with advertisements for prescription card plans and alternative health care plans. While some of them won’t be suited to your needs, there may be one that is perfect for you. An affordable health care insurance plan can be found, but you might have to do some searching.

Sure Way to Earn More Money

Filed under: Search Engine Optimization Hall — admin at 10:46 pm on Wednesday, February 25, 2009

I was working on my car yesterday because I had recently bought a DVD player for my previous car. I returned the previous car back to my mum for her use but my new car still felt empty. It didn’t help when the previous day I took out the stereo head unit and when I went to put it back in, I realised that it was factory head unit and most factory head units these days come with a security code to prevent thefts. I had no choice to drive around for half the day without music to listen to, which I had to admit, was a pleasant change to how I normally travel. I went to JB HIFI to decide what stereo unit I should get. I had a dilemma, I had two cars and one DVD stereo unit. I wanted to have a DVD unit but the problem was do I purchase a new one for myself or just take the existing one I had. I noticed that there was a really good DVD head unit for sale and even with the 30% off, was still too pricey for my wallet. I remember that search engine optimisation Melbourne was a sure way to earn more money. I will have to work on my SEO and hopefully increase my profits so I can buy things that I want.

Great Snow All over the Alps

Filed under: Life Of Travel, Recreation Tips, Sports Tips — admin at 1:29 am on Wednesday, February 25, 2009

Weve had nearly 2 metres snowfall during the last 7 days. The snowfall has been so prolonged that chairlifts were stopped, the train has been stopping at Chamonix train station and not heading onwards to Les Grands Montets. Roads were shut past our chalet holiday accommodation and weather warnings issued.

Compare this to a few winter seasons past, when we experienced the unusually hot Feb weather, mud showing on the pistes, and admonitions that climate change could mean the finish of the ski industry in the European Alps. The OECDs study from winter 2006 predicted that climate change could make ski holidays far too dear for the majority of holiday makers, with one-third of skiing resorts becoming insolvent with the thawing of glaciers. Scientists say that it is virtually impossible to attribute these seasonal deviations in the snow conditions to the outcomes of climate change.

We may have the deepest downturn in 30 years, and the pound has headed to new levels compared to the euro, but the conditions are superb, and the recent bookings show that people are enthusiastic to revel in the great snow conditions. It is certainly the greatest in eight winter seasons, and many skiers are announcing that it’s the nicest skiing conditions in 10 seasons.

Nonetheless think that big dumps like these mean large risks of avalanche.

Sacrifice to the Poker Gods

Filed under: Gambling Luck, Internet Games, The Funny Farm — admin at 11:18 am on Tuesday, February 24, 2009

Sacrifice to the poker gods. It may sound blasphemous, but there are times when it may be favorable to publicly lose a hand in poker. It hurts me to write this, but I’ve seen it happen, and it has worked for me personally, so I would be remiss if I didn’t share this information with you. When you play poker, you have to be aware that your opponents are watching your every move. If you don’t try to throw up a smokescreen every now and then, pretty soon they’ll know exactly what kind of player you are, and will be able to take your chips with ease.

If you’re a tight player like me and you don’t change up your style, then you will start to see your game get flat. On the rare occasions that you see a hand that is worth raising, your opponents will know that you’ve got something and will bow out of the hand. Few things are worse than having a full house and having no one to bet with. To prevent this, play rags every now and then. Place a small bet with high pair, or make a bad call that doesn’t cost you very much. If people see that you will play with garbage, than they’ll eventually think that it’s worth calling when you raise.

The New Piccolo Lift on Whistler Mountain

Filed under: Recreation Tips — admin at 9:07 am on Monday, February 23, 2009

You don’t really need an excuse to book a winter ski trip to Whistler; after all, it has the highest vertical drop in North America, the biggest skiable area, the most off-piste terrain and the best spas and restaurants. However, if you did need one, the announcement of the new Piccolo lift on Whistler Mountain might just fit the bill.

The Piccolo Express Lift on will run to the Piccolo peak from the bottom of Flute Bowl and will open up more than 1000 acres of the most spectacular high alpine terrain available in North America. This is terrain that has historically been available only to the hardiest of ski-mountaineers, since each vertical metre of descent into this legendary bowl had to be paid for with perhaps half a minute of hard climbing. And given that this lift will be 2112 metres long, with a vertical elevation of 509 metres - well, you can do the math. Flute Bowl will now become a hike-in, ski-out bowl thanks to the Piccolo lift.

The new acreage is a mixture of open bowls, deep snow and gladed sub-alpine terrain. It will appeal to advanced and intermediate skiers alike, since it will have both runs through the trees and wide open groomed areas. The path back to Whistler Village or Creekside will be via the Burnt Stew Trail to the bottom of Harmony Express. It is expected to provide significant relief to the frequent queues at Harmony. Plans call for construction to be completed within the summer of 2006 and for the lift, which will be a high-speed detachable quad, to be ready by November. Locals expect that the Piccolo lift will further extend the preference for Whistler over Blackcomb mountains by expert skiers.

So if you did need that excuse, you’ve got it. And if you’re looking for a great selection of Whistler chalets, try this link.

Fishing Flies 101

Filed under: Recreation Tips — admin at 11:56 pm on Sunday, February 22, 2009

The world of fly fishing can be a confusing one, beginners are forced to learn new lingo, new techniques, and digest new info regarding fish and their behavior. Of the years we have published many articles to help beginners and veterans alike, they are archived at http://www.bigyflyco.com for your use.

This article is an overview of fly fishing flies, and mostly fly fishing flies used primarily for trout. Although we will touch on other species as well. When you browse a fly shop, a catalog or an online fly shop, you will see flies organized into a few broad categories. And then perhaps sub-divided again into smaller categories. But lets us first look at these broad categories. Generally you will see Nymphs, Dry Flies, Streamers and nowadays probably Beadhead Nymphs or just Beadheads. First off all these are common trout flies, and many can be used for other species as well, streamers are especially useful for virtually all game fish.

Nymphs-are flies used below the surface of the water, fish consume anywhere from 70-90% of their diet underwater, so nymphs tend to be the most common type of fly used. Most of the time nymphs are used in conjunction with weight placed somewhere from 1-3 feet up the tippet (leader) from the fly. This way the nymph will sink under the water to where an eagerly awaiting fish will oblige your desire and chomp it. And really that is all you ever need to know to fly fish like a master. OK there is a little more to it than that. Popular nymphs include: Hare’s Ear, Pheasant Tail, Prince Nymphs, Stonefly nymphs, and Copper Johns.

Beadheads- Beadheads or beadhead nymphs migrated to America from Europe and became wildly popular. (Well not the actual nymphs, but the fly patterns.) Unfortunately fish are not stupid, and while they are still the most popular category of pattern today, they are not the panacea we all though twenty years ago. Yes, fish do evolve. Beadheads are simply nymphs with a little, usually gold bead, by the eye of the hook. They allow faster sinking, a different ’swimming action’, and the bright bead attracts fish. Popular beadheads include all the nymphs named above with a beadhead tied in front of them.

Dry Flies–Dry Flies are the classic fly requiring the graceful casting that most non-fly fishers think of as fly fishing. Dry flies are tied to float on top of the water, and provide for remarkable strikes from fish as they rise to the surface eagerly attack your offering. While being the most dramatic form of fly fishing it also requires the most stealth and patience and can cause the most frustration. But the rewards are exhilarating. Popular dry flies include: Adams, Elk Hair Caddis, Stimulator, Wulffs, Parachutes.

Streamers-Streamers are ‘flies’ or patterns tied to imitate smaller fish, leeches, and crustaceans. To think that fish only eat insects is foolish snobbery, although a thought maintained by some. Fish eat indiscriminately, and that includes everything available to them, even the bit of your sandwich that fell into the water. There are times and places where minnows and leeches make up the majority of a game fish diet, and unlike many nymphs and dry flies, streamer type food is available year around. Popular streamers include Woolly Bugger, Muddler Minnows, Egg-Sucking Leech, Mickey Finns. Many of these patterns are available either as a beadhead or the similar conehead.

These categories can be broken down again, and even again. Dry flies in particular have a wide variety of sub-categories, including parachutes, which is taking standard dry flies and tying the hackle in a different fashion. You can also throw in a terrestrial category which is nothing more than a dry fly, whose origin was not the water. Such as ants, hoppers or beetles.

There are also specialty flies and these are generally classified by fish species instead of fly type. The exception is egg flies, which just look like fish eggs and while they are widely used for salmon and or steelhead they are also popular for trout. Besides salmon/steelhead flies, there are also bass flies which are also used for pike and other fish. And saltwater flies, which once again can be broken down further into species. As these are highly specialized, the fly angler interested in them probably already has an extensive knowledge for their area, if not they should consult an guide or fly shop in their local vicinity.

Take A Hiking Vacation

Filed under: Recreation Tips — admin at 5:02 am on Thursday, February 19, 2009

If you are in the mood for a hiking vacation then you will probably want to consider the many trails in either the Great Smoky Mountain National Park in Tennessee or Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado.

Of course there are many other parks and trails throughout the United States but these two destinations offer some of the most scenic and majestic mountain vistas available.

Both the Smoky Mountain National Park and Rocky Mountain National park offer different levels of trails for your hiking vacation.

Whether you are taking the family for a casual vacation or are looking for more adventure and exercise in a very strenuous hike, either location can accommodate your plans.

There are more than 850 miles of trails in the Great Smoky Mountains, more than enough to keep you busy for your hiking vacation.

With the miles of trails available, my favorite in the Smoky Mountains is the hike to Chimney Tops. The Chimney Tops trail is a mildly strenuous hike with some incredible views. The last 50 yards is very steep, with a spectacular view at the very top. It is a 4 mile round trip that is well worth the effort.

While the Smoky Mountains are exceptionally beautiful, the grandeur of the Colorado Rockies is unmatched in the continental United States.

Majestic snow covered peaks rise out of the plains to reach heights above 14,000 feet in the case of Long’s Peak and more than 60 other peaks rise above 12,000 feet.

Within the 416 square miles of the park there are 355 miles of hiking trails. My favorite hike by far is the hike to Chasm Lake a the base of Longs Peak. The hike is a 9.5 mile round trip that changes in altitude from 9,000 feet to almost 12,000 feet. This is a fun, scenic hike, but it is moderately strenuous, so be well prepared with food and water.

Preparing For Your Hiking Vacation

Tens of thousands of people hike the trails of our national parks every year without incident and a hiking vacation can be an enjoyable and invigorating experience.

However, it is essential that you are prepared for your hiking experience.
This is a no-brainer, but one of the biggest mistakes hikers make is not realizing the total length of the hikes they are on. If the sign at the trail head says that the hike is 4 miles, remember you have to hike back also, making that an 8 mile round trip.

Don’t forget food and water. While food is needed on hikes of 3 to 4 miles and longer water is an essential on every hike. Even short hikes at higher altitudes can cause you to get thirsty faster than you would think.

You will also need the proper gear for hiking. Ican’t stress this enough, hiking boots are an essential part of a hiker’s equipment just as a water bottle and back pack are.

Do not try to hike a rocky trail in your tennis shoes. At the least you will have very sore feet and you could twist your ankle, making the rest of your hiking vacation an unpleasant experience, not to mention getting back to the car an adventure. Please get yourself some decent hiking boots. Your feet will thank you!

A hiking vacation can be an exhilarating experience for the serious hiker or for the whole family. You will get to see some beautiful scenery that you just can’t experience by passing by in your car or RV.

Plan your vacation, decide on a destination, get your equipment ready and off you go to the great outdoors.
