BC camping is like camping Yellowstone or camping California. The diversity of all the areas is very similar with mountains, stream, and lakes. You can get in to trouble very easy in the mountains if you are BC camping.

When BC camping most people just go for a short walk and find themselves lost fore every thing looks the same if you do not now or have any experience in the woods. If you find your self lost stay put do not wander around because every tree will look familiar and every stream is the one you pasted on the little walk you took.

Most kids that get lost will wander away from the campsite playing with the family pet or playing hide in seek with other kids and got scared and tried to find the campsite. But wandered farther and farther away.

I put a whistle on a sting and place it around the kids neck and the rule is they can not take it off till we are ready to leave for home. The kids are not allowed to blow the whistle unless they are in trouble. They will try just to see if it works but if you explain it is only for an emergency they will understand. Tell them it is like calling 911 on the phone all kids understand what 911 is for.

If you find yourself lost or confused as to the direction back to camp a whistle around your neck would help. I even have one for myself and my wife. This way if you should lose your way for what ever the reason a whistle of three short blasts will get the attention of most campers of people looking for you.

If you are in the woods and lost stay put providing you are not in danger if the weather changes look for a safe place to protect yourself from the elements. But not to far don’t wander around for hours looking for a safe place if needed stand on the down wind side of a large tree. It will offer you some protection and blow you whistle every 10 or 15 minutes with three short blasts and listen for the people looking for you.

Do not wander off looking for the people that are looking for you just use your whistle above all help will arrive .Do not panic if you find your self lost stay calm and reason out where you are sit tight folks are looking for you.

I have found many people only because I have the training. Do not interfere with the professional searches they have the gear and the training to find people. They are a very dedicated group of people and will not give up, no matter how harsh the weather gets. You do not want them to have to find you because you got lost looking for some one be it a family member or a friend.

If some one from your group gets lost and you cant find them in the near area call or find the ranger or park attendant they have the knowledge on who should be called to help, and to call the need for a search.

So be safe and enjoy the camping think before you act. BC camping is great!

A lot of planning goes into making a great vacation. If you’re planning a vacation, be sure to consider the safety of your home while you’re away and create an action plan to keep your home and belongings safe.

Some people prey on homes when they know the owners are out of town or on vacation. There are certain steps you need to take before leaving to make the house look like someone is there at all times. Like the old saying goes, “If there is bait, the fish will grab.” You can relate this saying to the way burglars think. Don’t leave out any bait that would tempt a burglar.

What is the bait that burglars look for? There are several things the burglars pay close attention to at your home. Your job is to make sure you put a plan of action into place before leaving your house.

Here are five tips to make sure your house is safe.

1) Temporarily cancel newspaper subscription - Most newspapers let you contact them and put a hold on your subscription until you get back. This allows for credits for the days you are gone and the newspapers are not just piling up and going to waste. Another idea is letting your neighbor or someone in neighborhood to get your daily newspapers.

2) Daily Mail - Make sure someone is checking your mail each day in case you have some important documents coming and also the mail is not increasing in your mail box. If someone sees the mail is overloading, they will automatically know you are not at the house.

3) Cars in the Driveway - Never have all vehicles completely gone out of the driveway. Leave your spouse’s car or borrow another family member’s car to leave in the driveway and arrange for the vehicle to moved and repositioned while you’re away. This way the driveway is not a complete ghost town.

4) Lights on in the house - Set up specific lights in the house on a daily timer to come on each evening. You do not want to leave your house continuously dark the entire time you’re out of town. This is a number one giveaway to potential home break-ins.

5) Have someone check daily - Request that a close friend or neighbor checks on your house daily. They can go through the house and check around to make sure there is no harm done to the house. Also if you have any pets, they will be able to feed and water the pets while they are checking on the house.

Safeguarding your home and belongings should be high on your priority list at all times, but even more so when you’re going to be away for any length of time.
Implementing these strategies doesn’t guarantee your home won’t be broken into while you’re away, but it does greatly reduce your chances of a break-in. If you’re going away on a vacation or out of town for an extended period of time, the extra peace of mind knowing that your home is being taken care of is well worth the time put into initiating this type of plan.

This is one of the most fun things that you could ever do when you are gong to adventure travel and it is not even a little bit dangerous.

Why We Like the Green Giant Arborvita(e) So Much

Our farm, Highland Hill Farm, is located in the solid clay soils so common to Pennsylvania. We therefore like plants that grow well in dense, heavy, rather impermeable, NOT well-drained soils. One of the arborvitae, the Green Giant, the Western Redcedar Tree, or botanically, the Thuja Plicata, is our favorite. Here is why:

The hardiness zone the Green Giant Arborvita tolerates is from zone 5 to zone 8. That’s where extreme cold temperatures get down to a temperate level of about 15 or 20 degrees in the winter (Zone 8), but also as low as a frigid level of 15 or 20 degrees BELOW zero (zone 5). Green giants are evergreens, being cedars. Their rapid growth rates can in ideal conditions reach 3 feet per year. Site requirements for the Green Giant Arborvita are sun to partial shade, moist well drained soil preferred (but still does well in clay), and protection from wind, at lest when young.

The Green Giant is a beautiful tree. It has an aesthetically fine form. It’s conical, being narrow to broadly pyramidal, reaching from 50 feet to 80 feet in height in southeastyern Pennsylvania. The width at the base of the cone is usually about 15 feet to 20 feet. The leaves are rich green making graceful foliage.

Green Giants make a superb privacy screen. They keep their foliage color year ’round, great for brightening bleak gray winter days with snow on the ground. The cinnamon bright red bark when young turn rich russet brown with time crating a strong contrast with the needle leaves.

Green Giants’ flowers, their fruit are pretty little light brown half-inch female cones. (Just so you know, Green giants are females, so its okay to call the cones pretty.) The Green Giant is also a wonderful shade tree, casting a dark, dense shade. The wood is strong too, once the tree is beyond its youth.

This is an arborvita that should outlive even your grandchildren. There are Green Giants out west documented to be over 300 years old. Just don’t plant these too close to the ocean, or roads in areas where there’s a lot of salt used for snow removal. If you get over 100 inches of snowfall and more per year, no roadside Arborvita planting where salt is used, PLEASE. The greatest soldier of ancient Greece in the Trojan war had his one little weak spot, what proved to be a fatal flaw, and the “Achilles Heel” for Green Giant Arborvitae is hypersensitivity to salt.

Is it just me or do sales people in the UK just not trust their product? I was called by a telesales rep today about some deals on broadband and mobile Internet for a company (who shall remain nameless). The deal he was pitching sounded great but I told him that I wouldn’t proceed without doing a broadband comparison.

He then hit me with the hard pitch, a bunch of sales speak and some rubbish about the deal he was calling about only being available now. As it happens, I have been thinking about moving broadband provider and have been very tempted by the idea of getting mobile Internet, so I am really the ideal customer for him.

But he was determined not to let me go make my broadband comparison, worried, presumably, that I would realise that the deal he was offering wasn’t that good (actually it was a very good deal). Why is it these sales people have no faith in their products? If they are going to be pitching these goods and deals over the phone surely they have to believe they are good deals for me, if not they would simply be rip off merchants.

Either way the hard sell turned me off and I hung up on him, but I am looking at these broadband and mobile Internet offers trying to decide which to get. Broadband genie.co.uk has a great page that gave me all the info I needed.

A stupendous stone in my opinion! Its colours range from yellowish grey all the way through to the most magnificent deep blues and violet and that is the colour which particularly mesmerizes me. It is often confused with sapphires and tanzanites. It is plentiful and relatively inexpensive but do not write off its high gemstone quality.

Iolite comes from the Greek “ios” meaning violet. It was also called diochroite another Greek word which means “two coloured” stone.

On the Moh’s scale used for measuring hardness with diamond being the highest at 10 Iolite comes in at 7-7.5 which means it is about mid range for your usual high quality gemstones. That is significant as it will chip and scratch but will also stand up to normal wear and tear. It seems that it is one of the few stones that is not treated or enhanced. For reference, something like ninety percent of all rubies are heat treated and many other stones such as topaz are irradiated.

The Vikings knew about as it was found in Scandinavia. They knew a secret about iolite which may have changed the course of history. They used it as a navigation tool. By looking through the crystal they could see the direction of the sun on overcast days. This was a function of its pleochroism which means that it changes colour when you look at it from different angles. To understand that better imagine that you can hold it and look at a magnificent deep blue and just by turning it around the colour stars to disappear until you cannot see any colour at all! This is pleochroism and iolite has pronounced pleochroism.

It is a cutters’ nightmare. Well, at least it is not an easy stone to cut and get the most from even though it can be cut into the standard facet cuts such as emerald, marquise, trillion and can also be made into beautiful cabochons.

As the carat size increases iolite generally gets darker and less attractive. The smaller stones are often the most attractive. The lighter blues and greys are less expensive with the richer the blue colour being the more expensive. It is not a birthstone and as a significant gemstone perhaps iolite’s time has not come yet but it is getting more and more popular every day so expect to see it become very popular in coming years. I heartily recommend it to you. A yellow gold ring with diamonds and a central iolite is simply adorable.

It’s vital that you retain any personal documents in a secure location, particularly with sensitive information such as your Social Security Number. You’d do well to store this sort of paperwork in a solid lockbox, which is then kept in a location that is both safe and out of sight. This may sound a touch paranoid to you, but identity theft is not unheard of in the wake of home robberies. Similarly, be aware of your surroundings when you have a reason to carry these documents on your person. Have a look over your shoulder before presenting such information to anyone, and when inputting your bank PIN number at the ATM or grocery store, cover the keypad with one hand as you type with the other. Such precautions might seem overly simple, but they do work.

Should you become a victim of identity theft despite the above precautions, it is vitally important that you don’t wait to take action. Your first move should be to contact any one of the three major credit bureaus in the United States (Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion) and request that they place a fraud alert on your credit report. The bureau you make this request of is then obligated to pass the word on to its counterparts. A fraud alert means that you will automatically be opted out of any pre-approved offers of credit and insurance for up to two years, and it also enables you to work with the bureau to wipe fraudulent charges from your records. You should also promptly file a report with your local police department. Not only does this begin the investigative process, it also enables the credit bureaus to instantly delete fraudulent charges and information without having to conduct their own investigation.

Far too many people who are training in the martial arts or in a self-defense program - including police and security personnel by-the-way - take for granted that all they have to do is learn a few tricks and that’s it. When, according to the reality and nature of self-defense, no technique that you’ve learned in a martial arts or self-defense class is perfect in-and-of-itself for the unique situation and circumstances that you will find yourself in when you need it.
