Camping In BC - Beautiful British Columbia

Filed under: Recreation Tips — admin at 6:20 am on Wednesday, December 31, 2008

BC camping is like camping Yellowstone or camping California. The diversity of all the areas is very similar with mountains, stream, and lakes. You can get in to trouble very easy in the mountains if you are BC camping.

When BC camping most people just go for a short walk and find themselves lost fore every thing looks the same if you do not now or have any experience in the woods. If you find your self lost stay put do not wander around because every tree will look familiar and every stream is the one you pasted on the little walk you took.

Get the 2005 Trailer Life Directory for 50% off the cover!

Most kids that get lost will wander away from the campsite playing with the family pet or playing hide in seek with other kids and got scared and tried to find the campsite. But wandered farther and farther away.

I put a whistle on a sting and place it around the kids neck and the rule is they can not take it off till we are ready to leave for home. The kids are not allowed to blow the whistle unless they are in trouble. They will try just to see if it works but if you explain it is only for an emergency they will understand. Tell them it is like calling 911 on the phone all kids understand what 911 is for.

If you find yourself lost or confused as to the direction back to camp a whistle around your neck would help. I even have one for myself and my wife. This way if you should lose your way for what ever the reason a whistle of three short blasts will get the attention of most campers of people looking for you.

If you are in the woods and lost stay put providing you are not in danger if the weather changes look for a safe place to protect yourself from the elements. But not to far don’t wander around for hours looking for a safe place if needed stand on the down wind side of a large tree. It will offer you some protection and blow you whistle every 10 or 15 minutes with three short blasts and listen for the people looking for you.

Do not wander off looking for the people that are looking for you just use your whistle above all help will arrive .Do not panic if you find your self lost stay calm and reason out where you are sit tight folks are looking for you.

I have found many people only because I have the training. Do not interfere with the professional searches they have the gear and the training to find people. They are a very dedicated group of people and will not give up, no matter how harsh the weather gets. You do not want them to have to find you because you got lost looking for some one be it a family member or a friend.

If some one from your group gets lost and you cant find them in the near area call or find the ranger or park attendant they have the knowledge on who should be called to help, and to call the need for a search.

So be safe and enjoy the camping think before you act. BC camping is great!

Here at Camping-For-Fun I’m going to make sure your camping trip is plenty of fun!

Keeping Your Home Safe While on Vacation

Filed under: Security Center — admin at 5:42 pm on Tuesday, December 30, 2008

A lot of planning goes into making a great vacation. If you’re planning a vacation, be sure to consider the safety of your home while you’re away and create an action plan to keep your home and belongings safe.

Some people prey on homes when they know the owners are out of town or on vacation. There are certain steps you need to take before leaving to make the house look like someone is there at all times. Like the old saying goes, “If there is bait, the fish will grab.” You can relate this saying to the way burglars think. Don’t leave out any bait that would tempt a burglar.

What is the bait that burglars look for? There are several things the burglars pay close attention to at your home. Daily newspapers piling up in the driveway, a continuous dark house, and no cars in the driveway are just a few things that they look for. Your job is to make sure you put a plan of action into place before leaving your house.

Here are five tips to make sure your house is safe.

1) Temporarily cancel newspaper subscription - Most newspapers let you contact them and put a hold on your subscription until you get back. This allows for credits for the days you are gone and the newspapers are not just piling up and going to waste. Another idea is letting your neighbor or someone in neighborhood to get your daily newspapers.

2) Daily Mail - Make sure someone is checking your mail each day in case you have some important documents coming and also the mail is not increasing in your mail box. If someone sees the mail is overloading, they will automatically know you are not at the house.

3) Cars in the Driveway - Never have all vehicles completely gone out of the driveway. Leave your spouse’s car or borrow another family member’s car to leave in the driveway and arrange for the vehicle to moved and repositioned while you’re away. This way the driveway is not a complete ghost town.

4) Lights on in the house - Set up specific lights in the house on a daily timer to come on each evening. You do not want to leave your house continuously dark the entire time you’re out of town. This is a number one giveaway to potential home break-ins.

5) Have someone check daily - Request that a close friend or neighbor checks on your house daily. They can go through the house and check around to make sure there is no harm done to the house. Also if you have any pets, they will be able to feed and water the pets while they are checking on the house.

Safeguarding your home and belongings should be high on your priority list at all times, but even more so when you’re going to be away for any length of time.
Implementing these strategies doesn’t guarantee your home won’t be broken into while you’re away, but it does greatly reduce your chances of a break-in. If you’re going away on a vacation or out of town for an extended period of time, the extra peace of mind knowing that your home is being taken care of is well worth the time put into initiating this type of plan.

Filed under: Recreation Tips — admin at 2:16 am on Monday, December 29, 2008

There is not much in the world that is more exciting than adventure travel. When you are taking part in adventure travel you are taking risk, you are getting out there and finally living life to the fullest. When was the last time that you actually did that? Probably a long time ago right? Well there is no time like the present to change things for the better and to experience all that life has to offer.

There are all kinds of great vacations that you can take when it comes to adventure travel and not all of them are filled with death defying stunts and danger. Sure, some of them are but if that is not your think then you don’t have to choose them. Everyone has a different comfort level and adventure travel just means taking a trip that is exciting, one that is a little out of your normal travel behavior. You don’t have to go and climb Mount Everest or anything like that to have a good time with adventure travel.

Some of the best adventure travel has barely any danger to it whatsoever. Have you ever climbed through the runs of Greece, or hiked in the Amazon, or even gone surfing in Costa Rica? If not these are great ways to get your feet wet with adventure travel. With this kind of adventure travel you will be able to have a great time and not do anything too, too dangerous. Just things that excite you and thrill you to the bone.

Can you imagine taking a trip to some exotic locale and then experiencing some of their ways of life. Have you ever heard of Zorbing? It is something that they do in New Zealand, and it is so much fun. All you do is climb into a giant ball, it is like a great big beach ball, just climb in it and they roll you down the hill. There is usually some water in it to cushion any bumps that you might hit along the way down. The water is not dangerous to you and your breathing because it is kept totally separate from you in a different compartment of the ball. This is one of the most fun things that you could ever do when you are gong to adventure travel and it is not even a little bit dangerous.

You see adventure travel is something that everyone can enjoy, no matter what they danger tolerance happens to be. If you are sick and tired of the same old same old then you need to find out some more about adventure travel today. Start planning your next trip abroad now, with a little more adventure in mind. It is always fun to try something new and exciting so go for it and have a blast!

Why We Plant So Many Green Giant Arborvitae in Pennsylvania

Filed under: Recreation Tips — admin at 11:58 pm on Saturday, December 27, 2008

Why We Like the Green Giant Arborvita(e) So Much

Our farm, Highland Hill Farm, is located in the solid clay soils so common to Pennsylvania. We therefore like plants that grow well in dense, heavy, rather impermeable, NOT well-drained soils. One of the arborvitae, the Green Giant, the Western Redcedar Tree, or botanically, the Thuja Plicata, is our favorite. Here is why:

The hardiness zone the Green Giant Arborvita tolerates is from zone 5 to zone 8. That’s where extreme cold temperatures get down to a temperate level of about 15 or 20 degrees in the winter (Zone 8), but also as low as a frigid level of 15 or 20 degrees BELOW zero (zone 5). Green giants are evergreens, being cedars. Their rapid growth rates can in ideal conditions reach 3 feet per year. Site requirements for the Green Giant Arborvita are sun to partial shade, moist well drained soil preferred (but still does well in clay), and protection from wind, at lest when young.

The Green Giant is a beautiful tree. It has an aesthetically fine form. It’s conical, being narrow to broadly pyramidal, reaching from 50 feet to 80 feet in height in southeastyern Pennsylvania. The width at the base of the cone is usually about 15 feet to 20 feet. The leaves are rich green making graceful foliage.

Green Giants make a superb privacy screen. They keep their foliage color year ’round, great for brightening bleak gray winter days with snow on the ground. The cinnamon bright red bark when young turn rich russet brown with time crating a strong contrast with the needle leaves.

Green Giants’ flowers, their fruit are pretty little light brown half-inch female cones. (Just so you know, Green giants are females, so its okay to call the cones pretty.) The Green Giant is also a wonderful shade tree, casting a dark, dense shade. The wood is strong too, once the tree is beyond its youth.

This is an arborvita that should outlive even your grandchildren. There are Green Giants out west documented to be over 300 years old. Just don’t plant these too close to the ocean, or roads in areas where there’s a lot of salt used for snow removal. If you get over 100 inches of snowfall and more per year, no roadside Arborvita planting where salt is used, PLEASE. The greatest soldier of ancient Greece in the Trojan war had his one little weak spot, what proved to be a fatal flaw, and the “Achilles Heel” for Green Giant Arborvitae is hypersensitivity to salt.

A Brief Guide To RSS

Filed under: Net Tips — admin at 5:13 pm on Saturday, December 27, 2008

Before proceeding to other parts of the article, please take your
time to read the following definitions:

RSS:

RSS, rich site summary, or really simple syndication, is an XML format for sharing contents (such as news items) among different Web sites.

Feed:

It is an xml file containing headlines and descriptions also called news feed, content feed, xml feed or web feed.

Web Syndication:

Web syndication is a form of syndication in which a section of a website is made available for other sites to use. This could be simply by licensing the content so other people can use it, but more commonly these days web syndication refers to making Web feeds available

XML:

Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a W3C-recommended general-purpose markup language for creating special-purpose markup languages, capable of describing many different kinds of data. Its primary purpose is to facilitate the sharing of data
across different systems, particularly systems connected via the Internet.

Atom:

atom is a really small particle or an XML-based document format and HTTP-based protocol designed for the syndication of Web content such as weblogs (or blogs) and news headlines to Web sites as well as directly to user agents. It is based on experience gained in using the various versions of RSS.

Now let move to other parts of this article.

How does RSS work?

A website can allow other sites to publish its content by creating an RSS document and register the document with an RSS publisher.

Some Benefits of Using RSS:

1)Alternative To Email

Although you subscribed for email newsletter but you may be tired of all the junk mail you receive. By subscribing to RSS feed, you don’t need to worry about receiving any email.

2)Faster Than Browsing Web Page

RSS feeds are loosely coded and thus reading RSS feed is faster.

3)Search Engine Friendly

Being rich in contents and keywords and also constantly updating, major search engines like google, yahoo and alexa love them.

4)More Exposure For Your Site

Unless regular messages, RSS feeds are picked up and monitored by feed reader and blog sites such as weblog.com. This is similar to getting more targeted search engine traffic.

5)Content Is Delivered Instantly

With RSS, contents are delivered instantly to the reader over their choices of feed reader. RSS is a content delivery system that does not get filtered. All RSS articles are sent straight through your subscriber.

6)Can Get Listed Within Hours

You can get your site indexed in yahoo and msn within hours, using RSS.

7) Easily Remove Yourself From The Subscription

All RSS articles are also instantly delivered. You can easily remove yourself from the RSS feed subscription and it is as simple to hitting the delete key.

8) Different Media Type Support

RSS can support many media types including audio and video.

9) Easy Handling Options For Publishers
There are no subscription or removal links that RSS publishers need to take care of.

What Does It Require To Read A RSS Feed?

1)Internet connection

2) A Feed reader, to read the RSS feed from the RSS
channel (browser like opera has inbuilt feed reader)

3)If you are a publisher, then you need a way to publish your article.

For creating an RSS feed, you need to create an RSS file.
For creating an RSS file, read some tutorial by searching at google.

After creating the rss file you need to save it with either of the two extensions .xml or .rss. After saving you need to validate the RSS file, which you can do at
http://www.feedvalidator.org

After validating your RSS file, you need to syndicate it. For this you should have a code that other webmasters can place on their websites that will display your headlines. This code is usually a java script that the webmaster places on his site.

When anybody click on the XML or RSS link, the RSS feeds (or XML feeds) are instantly downloaded to his computer.

Do Salesmen Really Not Trust Their Products?

Filed under: Consumer Market, Information Technology, Telecommunication Infos — admin at 8:18 am on Friday, December 26, 2008

Is it just me or do sales people in the UK just not trust their product? I was called by a telesales rep today about some deals on broadband and mobile Internet for a company (who shall remain nameless). The deal he was pitching sounded great but I told him that I wouldn’t proceed without doing a broadband comparison.

He then hit me with the hard pitch, a bunch of sales speak and some rubbish about the deal he was calling about only being available now. As it happens, I have been thinking about moving broadband provider and have been very tempted by the idea of getting mobile Internet, so I am really the ideal customer for him.

But he was determined not to let me go make my broadband comparison, worried, presumably, that I would realise that the deal he was offering wasn’t that good (actually it was a very good deal). Why is it these sales people have no faith in their products? If they are going to be pitching these goods and deals over the phone surely they have to believe they are good deals for me, if not they would simply be rip off merchants.

Either way the hard sell turned me off and I hung up on him, but I am looking at these broadband and mobile Internet offers trying to decide which to get. Broadband genie.co.uk has a great page that gave me all the info I needed.

His lack of faith has probably lost him a sale.

Iolite - A Gemstone Used in Ancient Navigation

Filed under: Jewelers Hall — admin at 5:27 pm on Thursday, December 25, 2008

A stupendous stone in my opinion! Its colours range from yellowish grey all the way through to the most magnificent deep blues and violet and that is the colour which particularly mesmerizes me. It is often confused with sapphires and tanzanites. It is plentiful and relatively inexpensive but do not write off its high gemstone quality.

It is found in Switzerland, Germany, Scandinavia, the USA, Sri Lanka, India and Australia as well as many African states. It is also called cordierite.

Iolite comes from the Greek “ios” meaning violet. It was also called diochroite another Greek word which means “two coloured” stone.

On the Moh’s scale used for measuring hardness with diamond being the highest at 10 Iolite comes in at 7-7.5 which means it is about mid range for your usual high quality gemstones. That is significant as it will chip and scratch but will also stand up to normal wear and tear. It seems that it is one of the few stones that is not treated or enhanced. For reference, something like ninety percent of all rubies are heat treated and many other stones such as topaz are irradiated.

The Vikings knew about as it was found in Scandinavia. They knew a secret about iolite which may have changed the course of history. They used it as a navigation tool. By looking through the crystal they could see the direction of the sun on overcast days. This was a function of its pleochroism which means that it changes colour when you look at it from different angles. To understand that better imagine that you can hold it and look at a magnificent deep blue and just by turning it around the colour stars to disappear until you cannot see any colour at all! This is pleochroism and iolite has pronounced pleochroism.

It is a cutters’ nightmare. Well, at least it is not an easy stone to cut and get the most from even though it can be cut into the standard facet cuts such as emerald, marquise, trillion and can also be made into beautiful cabochons.

As the carat size increases iolite generally gets darker and less attractive. The smaller stones are often the most attractive. The lighter blues and greys are less expensive with the richer the blue colour being the more expensive. It is not a birthstone and as a significant gemstone perhaps iolite’s time has not come yet but it is getting more and more popular every day so expect to see it become very popular in coming years. I heartily recommend it to you. A yellow gold ring with diamonds and a central iolite is simply adorable.

Identity Theft - Awareness, Prevention, Recovery

Filed under: Net Tips — admin at 4:24 pm on Thursday, December 25, 2008

Identity theft is rapidly becoming the most popular crime of the new millennium. In an age where most of our daily transactions are conducted electronically, criminals are finding more and more ways of infiltrating computer systems once thought to be impervious. What’s especially frightening is that they require only a single successful attempt in order to steal everything that is your life. That one victory in accessing your data can result in financial ruin, or worse, criminal activities which are attributed to you because they were committed under your identity. Fortunately, there are ways to prevent identity theft, and options which you can pursue if you should ever become a victim of this terrible crime.

The best way to avoid the consequences of identity theft is to not become a victim in the first place. You’ll need to take some added precautions in your daily life in order to discourage identity thieves, but it will be well worth your time to do so.

Use of the internet is one of the most common causes of identity theft. We apply for jobs, go shopping, and even handle our banking over the internet. This makes it a prime target for identity thieves! In order to protect yourself, it’s important that you’re conscious of the vulnerabilities in your computer. Programs known as spy ware and viruses are capable of quietly infiltrating your system and wreaking all sorts of havoc. They might even be monitoring what you’re typing and then sending that information along to the malicious recipient. As such, it’s vital that you purchase good anti-virus software, which is available in virtually any retail computer store. Reputable anti-spy ware programs can be found freely on the internet and are quite effective.

Another effective protection against internet-based identity theft is called a firewall. This is essentially an addition to your computer which prevents hackers and other infiltrators from accessing your system any sensitive data contained therein. Firewalls can take the form of either internal software programs or external hardware devices which attach to your computer. Some forms of wireless internet routers also come equipped with firewalls. Acquiring a firewall, in whichever form you choose to apply one, is absolutely vital for anyone who stores or transmits personal information through their computer. Some users keep several firewalls raised at all times! After a point, attempting to break through layer upon layer of defenses is simply not worth the identity thief’s time, which means that personal information protected in this fashion is far more secure.

Of course, identity theft in the physical world remains a threat worthy of paying considerable attention to. It’s vital that you retain any personal documents in a secure location, particularly with sensitive information such as your Social Security Number. You’d do well to store this sort of paperwork in a solid lockbox, which is then kept in a location that is both safe and out of sight. This may sound a touch paranoid to you, but identity theft is not unheard of in the wake of home robberies. Similarly, be aware of your surroundings when you have a reason to carry these documents on your person. Have a look over your shoulder before presenting such information to anyone, and when inputting your bank PIN number at the ATM or grocery store, cover the keypad with one hand as you type with the other. Such precautions might seem overly simple, but they do work.

Should you become a victim of identity theft despite the above precautions, it is vitally important that you don’t wait to take action. Your first move should be to contact any one of the three major credit bureaus in the United States (Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion) and request that they place a fraud alert on your credit report. The bureau you make this request of is then obligated to pass the word on to its counterparts. A fraud alert means that you will automatically be opted out of any pre-approved offers of credit and insurance for up to two years, and it also enables you to work with the bureau to wipe fraudulent charges from your records. You should also promptly file a report with your local police department. Not only does this begin the investigative process, it also enables the credit bureaus to instantly delete fraudulent charges and information without having to conduct their own investigation.

No Martial Arts or Self-Defense Technique is Perfect

Filed under: School of Martial Arts — admin at 5:04 pm on Tuesday, December 23, 2008

Far too many people who are training in the martial arts or in a self-defense program - including police and security personnel by-the-way - take for granted that all they have to do is learn a few tricks and that’s it. When, according to the reality and nature of self-defense, no technique that you’ve learned in a martial arts or self-defense class is perfect in-and-of-itself for the unique situation and circumstances that you will find yourself in when you need it. And…

…that’s okay.

What’s important to learn is this…

…these techniques that everyone hold up as the “holy symbols of their style,”…

…were just passed down from past-generation masters as “examples” anyway!

After you’ve been training for a significant while with a focus on being able to handle a real-world self-defense situation, rather than merely memorizing a preset string of moves for your next belt, what you’ll find is that…

…in your attempt to defend yourself in a given situation and against a unique assailant with his own ‘favorite’ techniques and attack-methods, you will actually be stringing several basic moves together in a moment-to-moment, spontaneous flow. The trick is to know your techniques so well that you can do this in what appears to be an effortless flow from one technqiue or skill to the next.

Just as I pointed out in “The Karate-Myth” there are certain critical pieces missing from the vast majority of training programs. And, it is those key elements that MUST be managed during a physical altercation if you are to walk away with most of you intact.

So, if you really want to be able to use what you’ve learned in a real-world self-defense situation…

…then you must be able to give up your attachment to your “perfect techniques.”

Remember: The only people who believe that any given technique or skill is “perfect” or “unbeatable,” has not been around long enough, or…

…has deluded themselves into believing that training in class, or competing in a tournament, is somehow equivelant to the all-out, adrenalin-triggering, overwhelm that makes you feel like your heart will explode in your chest during the “real thing.”
