Blackstone Group Partners with German Power Supplier

Filed under: Best News Resources, Biz — admin at 3:12 pm on Wednesday, September 24, 2008

The Blackstone Group, one of United States’ largest private equity and investment banking firms, recently teamed up with an alternative energy provider. Windland Energieerzeugungs GmbH, a Germany-based power supplier, and the Blackstone Group banded together for the planned construction of their latest project, the Meerwind Wind Farm.

The Meerwind facility is located 80 kilometers off the northern coast of Germany. Slated to be among the largest wind farms to date in the North Seas at its completion, the said project is estimated to cost over 1 million euros ($1.47 million). The proposed 80-turbine wind farm is expected to generate a total of 1.6 billion kilowatts per hour on a yearly basis. Such power will be able to provide energy for 500,000 households.

The environmental benefits are projected by the German government to be tremendous. The Meerwind Project is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 40% by the year 2020. Since the facility is wind-powered, an approximated amount of 1.4 million tons of carbon dioxide produced by coal-based power plants is eliminated.

This particular partnership with Windland Energieerzeugungs GmbH is actually Blackstone Group’s second investment in their renewable energy efforts. The Blackstone Group sees that investments on ‘green’ infrastructures, such as the Meerwind Wind Farm, have positive effects on the local economy of the local and surrounding areas. A fully-developed green power zone in the northern coast of Germany is very enticing for developers and investors.

Yamaha Motorcycles - Creativity and Spirit of Challenge

Filed under: Bikes and Tours — admin at 12:35 pm on Wednesday, September 24, 2008

“If you are going to do something, be the best”
Ginichi Kawakami, Yamaha Motor Company First President.

Yamaha Motorcycles, under this motto, employing all its creativity, and with a very strong spirit of challenge, became what it is now: one of the biggest players in the worldwide motorcycling scene.

But Yamaha’s history doesn’t start with motorcycles…

It is back in 1877 that Torakusu Yamaha started with the Nippon Gakki Company that later would become Yamaha Corporation: an important manufacturer of fine musical instruments.

As the company grew, they explored several fields of opportunity in the textile industry and others.

During the World War II, the company set up a factory to produce airplane propellers. This plant played an important role in Yamaha’s entry to the motorcycle industry as you will see.

After the war, Yamaha Corporation had to find new ways to use the tooling and experience that had been accumulated during their times in the airplane industry, and it was then when Yamaha Motor Corporation was founded.

It’s important to mention that even though this new company was just another branch of Yamaha Corporation, it was placed under an independent management. In this case, under the guidance of Ginichi Kawakami; which turned out to be a brilliant move.

Before producing their first motorcycle, Ginichi Kawakami traveled a lot establishing what would be very useful relationships. He also sent out his engineers to Europe and had them learn how to build motorcycles, particularly from DKW; whom with they kept an underground and unofficial long lasting relationship.

One proof of this is that nowadays, the only two manufacturers in the world of mass-produced five side-valve engines are Yamaha an Audi (DKW - Auto Union).

One of the most important legacies from this international relationships were all the skills learnt by Yamaha’s engineers on two stroke engines know-how. Other manufacturers as Suzuki would not reach the same level of development in this area till seven years later.

Not to wonder why the first bike from Yamaha Motorcycles the 125 YA-1 was fairly a faithful copy of the 1949 DKW RT 12. The only two important differences were the four speed gearbox instead of the original three speed gearbox, and a gear transmission replacing the primary chain drive.

IMPORTANT MODEL FROM YAMAHA MOTORCYCLES

>>> Yamaha YA-1

Even though the Yamaha YA-1 - baptized “Acatombo” (Red dragonfly) by its fans - had “nothing in special” and was more expensive than its competitors, it almost immediately became a great success.

It was reliable: before putting it into the market, the prototypes were tested along 10,000 miles of rough rides . Even the big boss himself, Ginichi Kawakami, rode the bike without any incident from Hamamatsu to Tokyo.

It was beautiful: with this model Yamaha was the first manufacturer to put special attention to the decoration of the motorcycle. This task was given to GK Design in Tokyo. It’s worth mentioning that this firm has designed the “look” of most Yamaha motorcycles to date.

It was fast: the YA-1 obtained excellent overall results in the most important local races of that time: Mount Fuji (third place) and Mount Asama (first place).

In fact it was this aggressive attitude in the sporting world that helped Yamaha Motorcycles gain fast acceptance even though they made a late start in the motorcycle scene (in comparison to Honda and Suzuki).

In other words: Yamaha Motorcycles showed the world they had arrived to be considered good and fierce competitors from the beginning. Particularly to Honda and Suzuki.

Other important models from that time were:

>>> The Yamaha YD-1 (the competition for the Suzuki TP of that time)

Some technical specifications:

Yamaha YD-1

15 hp
70 mph.
185,000 yen

in comparison to:

Suzuki TP

18 hp
80 mph.
195,000 yen

>>> The Yamaha YDS-1

The dream bike of all young Japanese between 1959-1960.

Some technical specifications:

20 hp
333 lbs.
85 mph.

Direct rival of the Honda CB72

Since then, the history of models and victories goes on and on…

Today, Yamaha Motorcycles is one of the major players in the worldwide motorcycling scene.

Just to give you an idea of how important Yamaha Motorcycles have become:

- The 2004 Moto GP was won by excellent rider Valentino Rossi on a Yamaha motorcycle.

I could go an and on writing about Yamaha Motorcycles, victories, challenges and models but I would need a whole book…

So to learn more about Yamaha Motorcycles, I invite you to visit this page:
http://www.yamaha-motor.com/products/mcy/epic/epic_home.html
You will find a pictorial history of Yamaha Motorcycles from 1955 to 2001.

Enjoy the ride!

2006 Suzuki GSX-R1000 vs 2006 Yamaha YZF-R1

Filed under: Bikes and Tours — admin at 10:58 am on Wednesday, September 24, 2008

Buying a motorbike can be very hard at times. One probable reason for this is the numerous brands that all promise to sell the best bike model. At present, two of these leading motorbike manufacturers are Suzuki and Yamaha. The products of both companies have been tried and tested by a lot of people because they have dependable and high-quality machines.

With the Suzuki brand, one of its leading brands is the 2006 Suzuki GSX-R1000. This is not surprising since this bike boasts of having a powerful engine and torque. As such, the buyer can be assured that it will have an incredible acceleration or speed. Due to its lighter weight and easy to understand functions, the bike is easy to handle. Another change with the Suzuki GSX-R1000 is the 4.8 gallon fuel capacity. As such, there is no more need to make frequent stops at gasoline stations.

At an affordable price of 10,999 dollars, the buyer can buy it in the color combinations blue and white, silver and gray, as well as red and black. He can purchase the bike online or in Suzuki stores near his or her house. No matter where he buys the bike, he is still guaranteed to receive the one-year warranty with an unlimited mileage. No doubt about it, every penny he spends on this bike will be worth it.

As one of the leading bike producers of today, the model that Yamaha is proud to have created is the 2006 Yamaha YZF-R1. The bike model’s interior engine and exterior look have been perfected by Yamaha with its 50 years of experience in racing. During this time, the creators have made the bike faster by creating its advanced engine firepower. Like the Suzuki model, the Yamaha YZF-R1 also weighs lighter than most motor bikes in the market.

It seems like the two bikes have only a few things in common. Aside from their powerful engine and light weight, both bikes are also easy to handle. As such, riding these bikes will be such a breeze.

Win Street-Fights And Martial Arts Competitions…By Getting Drunk!

Filed under: School of Martial Arts — admin at 3:32 pm on Monday, September 22, 2008

There are some 30 different martial arts and self defense styles, philosophies and disciplines I teach in my street-fighting classes and seminars.

Each of these moves and skills are extremely simple, fast and easy to learn, no matter how big, small, fat, skinny, smart or slow a person is.

But by far, the most unorthodox of all these different fighting tactics — the one people actually have a hard time believing and taking seriously — is what’s called the “drunken style.”

This is where you fight in a way where you appear to be…well…drunk.

In other words, you move in a clumsy almost baffoon-like way, just like a sloppy drunk guy blindly stumbling out of a bar would move.

And what happens when you do this is…you lull your attacker into thinking he can easily take you down. He thinks you are super uncoordinated and slow. He may even think you are a little mentally off or just plain stupid.

When this happens, when they think you are some buffoon with two left feet, they get over confident — usually even cocky — and leave themselves open to all kinds of different counter attacks by you. In many cases, they won’t even know what hit them.

This is an incredibly effective strategy that’s not talked about very much. But it works like gangbusters when you do it right.

Ninjutsu Martial Arts Strategy: Key Moments & Phases in a Self-Defense Situation

Filed under: School of Martial Arts — admin at 2:20 am on Friday, September 19, 2008

A major pivoting point in my ninjutsu martial arts learning process happened when I realized that there was something more going on than just the punching, kicking, and what-not, that makes up conventional martial arts and self-defense training. In fact, once I saw it happening, my mind shifted away from the typical orientation toward this “style” or that, and started looking beyond the techniques themselves to…

…what was being “done” by each move in a technique string.

The question I began to ask was, “what’s the logic behind the moves?” And, “why are the moves where they are in this particular string?”

And THAT is what the book, “Controlling the Fight: The 5 Keys of Effective Self-Defense Strategy,” is all about.

It’s about understanding and recognizing the keys, or bridges, between one phase…

…one strategic moment…

…in a self-defense situation, and another.

It’s about controlling the “pieces” of a fight-scenario that must be strategically managed in the correct order, and at the correct time, if you are to be successful.

What are these critical moments within the flow of the fight? Let me first tell you what they’re NOT.

They are not…

…when you’re fist makes contact with the surface of your assailant’s body…

…when you lock his joints to immobilize him and prevent him from continuing to fight…

…when you take up your “way-cool” stance…

…the way with which you’ve been taught to hold your weapon, or…

…a hundred other “things” that most books, videos, and schools of martial arts and self-defense focus almost exclusively on.

But, they are not NOT these things either. If you don’t understand what I’m trying to point out here, you won’t see it.

Confused? Don’t be.

The point here is that, behind any move or technique itself - the punch, lock, throw, etc. - there is a “reason” that THAT particular technique is being done at THAT way, and at THAT particular time. There is something that the technique is either doing ‘for’ us or ‘to’ our attacker that gains, maintains, or accentuates our control of the situation. In short…

…there is something that makes a particular technique RIGHT and APPROPRIATE for any given moment…

…and completely WRONG for another.

And, make no mistake here. We are talking about a scientific application of principles that work, and have worked for centuries. And, this science works…

…for whoever is knowledgeable of, and in control of it in the fight!

What it means is this; if you know how to use this scientific application and make it the logic behind your strategic use of your skills and techniques, then you will probably win. If you don’t and your assailant does, you will lose.

So, what are these key moments or critical phases?

They are…

1) Your ability to assess your situation and understand what the assailant is doing or attempting to do to you.

2) Your defense against his incoming attacks. This is your ability to neutralize the effect that his attacks were to have on you.

3) How you unbalance him in a way that prevents your assailant from going on with his own strategy and literally puts him in a position of weakness.

4) The actual counter-attack that you use to knock him back or take him to the ground. This is the phase where you actually take the fight to him.

5) Your ability to assess the effect that your technique has had on your assailant and what your next move (escape, restrain him, or prepare for another barrage of attacks) should be.

In my attempt to learn how to really be successful at defending myself and others, I was lucky enough to find some teachers who could point the way towards many of these answers. Unfortunately (or fortunately, as this caused me to have to really look), we’re not talking about the step-by-step mechanics of the “style” here, as these can be taught by practically anyone to almost anyone else. What we ARE talking about is something that cannot be seen unless you know what you’re looking for. It’s invisible to the naked eye but there nonetheless.

Just know this. Each of these critical moments - these keys - is an important, no crucial, element in any overall defense strategy. But, where the book “The Karate-Myth” focused on the big-picture defense strategy that lead from General Awareness to Actually having to Deal with the Attacker (remember?), what I’m talking about here is the little-picture strategy of phase 6 - “dealing with the attack.”

Where an overall general self-defense strategy is ultimately designed to “avoid” dangerous situations altogether; this life-saving knowledge is all about effectively and efficiently handling one one you find yourself in it.

And, when the “rubber-meets-the-road,” so-to-speak…

…it doesn’t matter how many way-cool techniques you know, so much as…

…what you can “do” with them.

Sudden Power Failure

Filed under: Home Improvement Portal, Lifestyle Hub, The Shoppers Way — admin at 7:52 pm on Wednesday, September 10, 2008

Did you have any power problems at your house? Did you fridge break overnight? Are you concerned about the food that was in your freezer being okay?

Not to worry - there are some simple guidelines to food safety in such a situation.

If the food has warmed at all, whether thawed completely or just to room temperature, discard it immediately. If your food has been setting out for more than a couple of hours, it needs to be thrown out.

If the food has thawed out, but is still cold, it is safest to cook it right away. Once cooked, food can be refrigerated for later or eaten right away.

You can freeze the food again if ice crystals have formed on the surface. You can put it in a cooler with some dry ice if there is no freezer available to you. The food will need to be cooked, because it won’t last as long as with a normal freezer.

You can immediately get rid of items that have signs of freezer burn.

You can’t avoid sudden power outages caused by storms or accidents, but you can be prepared to deal with the results.
If your existing fridge or freezer has seen better days, the best advice that anyone can give you is you invest in a new one. Consider a large American Style fridge freezer when you have enough space. Any kitchen will be much better by having this. This site contains a wide range of American made fridges and freezers, aiming to serve you better.

Networking for Business

Filed under: Social Hub — admin at 3:18 am on Wednesday, September 10, 2008

It used to be said that you are only as good as your Rolodex.
Well, times have changed and that statement no longer holds true. Now, the mantra is “It’s not who you know, but who knows you.”

It’s all about the network.
What do you hope to accomplish with your network?
Do you want to build business?
Do you strive to develop personally and professionally?
Do you need a job?

Which of these business objectives do you hope to achieve through personal networking?

Increase visibility. Get a raise. Bring in/develop more business. Get a better job. Keep the job you have. Expand your professional horizons. Start your own business. Grow to become an expert or a speaker.

These objectives are all within your reach. The secret is to build the network to support you in attaining them.

Networking is an ongoing complicated process. Networking offers diverse benefits. These include finding partners, avoiding personal and financial disasters, making career changes, resolving conflicts, building businesses, meeting famous people, and more. Entering into a networking relationship with someone can provide many opportunities; however, time is a valuable asset. You must ensure that you use it judiciously when building your network.

Eight defining principles to help you create, cultivate, and reap the benefits of success through personal connections.

1. It’s not whom you know but who knows you.
Plan your networking campaign as if YOU were a business. People will not bang down your door if they do not know what you have to offer. Your greatest sales agent is you (and sometimes your mother)! After all, you know the product best. If you don’t market yourself, who will? Networking is not just a one-time event. It requires attention, consistency, and continuity.

2. Cultivate your relationships.
In today’s fast-paced, ever-changing business environment it is important for you to keep your connections active. Remember the old adage “Out of sight, out of mind”? It’s doubly true today. You are as memorable as your last communication or point of contact. So, if you are not communicating, then what? Who is going to remember you if you don’t make yourself memorable?
TIP: Keep your association memberships current and participate in local events, and committees.

3. Be yourself. Be authentic. Be confident.
Being self-confident and self-assured is essential to networking, even for the most outgoing individuals. Think of yourself as a product or resource that others need. Approach your system for networking as an investment. Trust your instincts. Believe in yourself. If you don’t, how will others? If going out on that limb is not your forte, work with a professional coach who will support you in your networking skill development.

4. Protect your network.
Your network is a delicate possession that needs care and attention. Each person you meet is working on a project, raising money for a cause, or dealing with some personal or professional issue. As a good networker, your goal should be to identify the need and help your new contact find a solution. Identify at least one thing you can do to follow up with new contacts. Send them a note saying how pleased you are to have met them. Use this follow-up as a way of reconnecting with the person you have just met. Make sure you reconnect within 48 hours.

5. Be prepared with your elevator pitch.
Remember, its not about YOU, its about your audience. Tell them things about you that will secure THEIR interest. You have one minute to capture someone’s attention. One minute to sell yourself and get them to listen. One minute before they stop listening and move on to the next person. This is doubly true and additionally difficult at a luncheon event where there are 10 different people to contend with. (The notable exception is if you are a buyer or purchasing agent.)
TIP: Always carry your business card. Make sure your business card looks as professional as you care to be remembered.

6. Support others in your network.
Don’t be afraid to say “Thank You.” In fact, say it often! Watch for ways to help your associates. Newspaper & magazine articles are great! When you notice a colleague’s name in a publication, cut it out and send it to them. Include a quick personal note along with your contact details. Make one day a week a telephone day, or commit to an hour a day to be on the phone and reconnect with the people important to you. Become recognized as a resource, so that people will want to stay connected to you. A note of caution: state clearly that you are happy to help and hope that the favor can be returned soon. If you don’t get a contract or a job, or close a sale, send the person a thank-you note anyway.

TIP: Carry thank-you notes or cards with you so that you can write quick notes after you meet someone.

7. Be generous to others.
What you give will be returned. You are probably familiar with the idea of focusing on WIIFM-”What’s In It For Me.” In networking, however, the “me” is really “them.” To be successful, you need to stay focused on WIIFT-”What’s In It For THEM.” Always consider what you can do for others. Pay close attention to the needs, desires, and interest of individuals in your network. Be wary of those that don’t reciprocate. There is a fine line between using your network and abusing it.

8. Continuously improve your networking skills.
Networking has been an integral part of being effective and efficient in business and in life. Building, maintaining, and improving your network and your networking skills are keys to success. Identify people to include in your network who excel at networking. Add them to your network and learn from them. What events do they attend? Whom do they know? How do they handle themselves? How do they support others? Keep tuned in to all the professional and career development opportunities out there. You should never be too busy to learn new tricks. Attend functions where you can establish a peer group. Be choosy. Don’t just go for the sake of going. Have a clear goal in mind about what you intend to get from your participation and follow up.

Adware and Spyware Software

Filed under: Security Center — admin at 10:12 pm on Monday, September 8, 2008

When you’re learning about something new, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the sheer amount of relevant information available. This informative adware and spyware article should help you focus on the central points.

Adware is any software application software which makes banners appear the whole time it is in function. Also, the adware program can install components that will transmit information about the user and its behavior and this work on his PC. Unlike spyware programs, the user is asked when the program is being installed. Actually, an adware application is the application that, along with its basic functionality, has a different one, the one that makes it show commercials once in a while, downloaded periodically from certain internet servers.

Spyware is a program, usually downloaded from the internet, which sends information about the user without him knowing it, every time he connects to the internet. Usually, the packages sent contain marketing information and not confidential information, although some programs can do that too.

Even if some applications are both adware and spyware, this is not a generally true situation. Most of the times spyware applications have installed themselves and they are working without the user knowing it, opposing the adware applications that cannot be installed without the consent of the user.

For a long time quality and free software was installed and used for free but once the complexity of the programs became greater their costs have risen till the point the developers just had to find out methods to diminuate them. One of the easiest ways was delivering along with their programs application like adware and spyware. On the other hand, many commercial programs became usable freely and legally by passing the line to the adware category.

Hopefully the information presented so far has been applicable. You might also want to consider the following:

>From the harmless intention of showing some commercials and till elements of analyzing and stocking information about the user and his software or hardware configuration the developers had to install on the target computer supplementary modules. If at the beginning it was only an engine that downloaded commercials and showed them in pre-calculated windows, the adware industry has evolved and grew a great bit since then. Now they use different instruments, from altering your browser and its settings and till launching background applications that monitor your PC activity.

Among the effects that follow installing spyware and adware are the next ones:

- Adding links to various magazines - Adding new commercials on the web pages, sometimes replacing the existent ones - Monitoring browser behavior in commercial purposes. - Gaining access to passwords and credit cards. - Slowing down the computer. - In some cases they can call telephone numbers with high costs. - Changing the browser’s homepage in commercial purposes. - Strange icons and new software might appear on the desktop.

You can enter their online sites and try the services for free, then decide what to use.

Hopefully the sections above have contributed to your understanding of adware and spyware. Share your new understanding about adware and spyware with others. They’ll thank you for it.
