Mind Your Manners When Traveling Abroad Part 1: They Must be Americans

Filed under: Life Of Travel — admin at 11:33 am on Saturday, June 28, 2008

It was a hot day, so when the couple finished a morning stint at the beach, they opted for a little shopping - in their swim wear. Wrapping a see-through, flimsy scarf around her bikini bottom, and he in his flip flops and sloganed t-shirt, they sallied into a sheik little shop on the main thoroughfare. Onlookers gasped and stared. Mothers covered the eyes of their gawking children. Mature men and women snickered or shook their heads. “They must be Americans”, one salesclerk whispered knowingly to another. Unfortunately, she was right.

When traveling, whether for business, pleasure or vacation, it pays to mind your manners. Americans especially are becoming increasingly known for their disrespectful behavior while abroad. Did I say becoming? The image of the “Ugly American” is already far too widespread. The stereotype of the loud talking, wise-cracking, inappropriately dressed, wealth-flaunting American foreigners who flaunt their lifestyle while traveling is unfortunately, all too real in some aspects in far too many cases. With anti-American sentiments growing worldwide, international corporations from Microsoft to McDonald’s and business publications like the Wall Street Journal have addressed the theme time and again. Here is some advice on how to foster a better, more intelligent, educated and respectful image when you travel abroad.

Know the local geography

Planning a trip abroad? First order of business - get a map and study it. Have an idea of how the city and its environs are laid out. Know important sites and landmarks. Many good travel guides provide essential information on getting around. This can be especially important if the local language uses a non-western alphabet writing system. On a recent trip in Colombia my wife and I listened in amusement as a foreigner explained to his family the compass directions - incorrectly. He had the directions of north and south reversed despite having the Pacific Ocean sunset in plain view.

Dress moderately

Not enough can be said about paying attention to local dress code and customs. In many countries it is disrespectful for women to dress casually, showing bare skin or body parts, in public. Bare hairy chests or legs on display, even for men, can be considered offensive in many cultures. If you’re not sure what’s appropriate, ask discretely or check informative websites for information on local customs. A useable rule of thumb is no bare legs, torso, back or arms when in public places. Emulate the dress of the locals to be sure you’re being respectful of their cultural norms. Embera Indian women, normally topless in their culture, cover up with a colorful wrap when they visit non-Indian towns and villages along South America’s Pacific Coast so that they are respectful of the social norms of their neighbors. Embera men, with their normal thong loin cloths, wear T-shirts and pants outside their villages for the same reasons.

Watch what and how you speak

Your speech is reflective of who and what you are. It can be a useful tool for the melding of cultures or a battering ram of discontent. Don’t create resentment by continuous babbling about your “affluence”, power, business or social status. People don’t care to hear how “inferior” their way of life may appear to be to you.

In part 2 of this three-part series, we’ll look at what to say and how to say it when traveling abroad in: “Mind Your Manners When Traveling: Religion is Taboo, Politics are Out”.

Cheapest Secured Loans: Save A Fortune On Your Secured Loan

Filed under: House Of Loans — admin at 10:13 am on Saturday, June 28, 2008

Cheapest secured loan - many lenders use this phrase in their advertisements. However, most of the offers are nothing more than a trap to lure the borrowers. The benefit the cheapest secured loan offers to the borrowers makes them blindly follow such advertisements and succumb to the temptation. The reality to which they wake up later, forces them to repent in leisure. To shop around and then choose the best offer - this basic lesson of getting a cheapest loan is learnt by such callous borrowers after paying a heavy price.

The first step in getting a cheapest secured loan is to know what you want. Before anything you do, you must enumerate your borrowing requirements clearly. The amount you want to borrow, how long would you like the repayment period to be, what amount of monthly installment are you comfortable with, would you like the loan to be from an online lender or an established bank etc., write each one of these and more on a paper. The clearer you are in your objectives the better your chances are of getting the cheapest secured loan.

Once you have listed your requirements, look for lenders that match and suit you the most. Make a list of these lenders and start visiting each one of them and note down their quotes. While visiting the lenders make sure that you present the same facts and collateral details about yourself. In this way you can get a range of quotes, which are based on the same ground realities.

The ingredients that make a secured loan cheaper or for that matter dearer are the APR, prepayment or late payment penalties, fees the lender charges for various services, the repayment period and the amount borrowed.

APR or the Annual Percentage Rate indicates the rate of interest any lender will charge on its loan. The lower the APR the better it is for the borrower. The APR rates vary a lot, as there are many lenders, competing for the service. To get the best APR the borrower must have a good credit history, and the collateral he offers for the secured loan must be of a sufficiently high value. A fixed APR is better than a floating APR if the borrower wants the Cheapest secured loans.

Lenders, to safeguard their interests, impose prepayment and late payment penalties. The quest for cheapest secured loans should culminate in a lender who does not offer any such penalty or if he does so, they are the lowest one prevailing in the lending market.

Fees for judging the value of the collateral is called property valuation fees. The lender charges this since he has to engage an expert. Some lenders are honest and charge only what the expert demands, but some try to extort money in the garb of valuation fee. This is also true for the solicitor’s fee, the conveyance and ‘other office charges’. Many lenders have in-house experts who take care of these proceedings. The borrowers are advised to go for such lenders, if he is not able to find one he should look for lenders who follow transparent procedures in charging such fees so that they are not duped and get the cheapest secured loans.

Needless to say finding a cheapest secured loan involves a considerable amount of shopping. A borrower has to persistently look for the lending offers in the market and analyse them to extract the cheapest offer.

Vital to getting the cheapest secured loan is the creditworthiness of the borrower. The lenders never ever overlook this fact, no matter however high the value of your collateral is. They don’t want hassles in repayment and last thing on their minds is a legal battle with the borrower. So, it is always in the interest of the borrower to maintain his/her creditworthiness.

CIA Chief Appointment and Military Intelligence

Filed under: Political Activities — admin at 4:16 pm on Thursday, June 26, 2008

Should the CIA be run by a military man? Some believe it should since the CIA is completely out of control and infiltrated by socialists who cannot keep their mouth shut.

Additionally many feel that the CIA lacks discipline and many know for a fact that the CIA status opens up another class of citizen in the United States which is above the law and many of the former CIA are into all sorts of industries and use their methodologies to run businesses, cheat in the competitive aspects of business and circumvent the law.

In fact the abuse of power both while in the CIA and post employment is so ramped inside our borders it is completely out of hand. Can the CIA be reformed thru a change in attitude and increased discipline?

When the CIA is so immersed in World affairs and their employees so immersed in American Politics it is truly amazing the level of inherent corruption and dishonest and the lack of integrity is pathetic. Personally it makes me want to puke. How dishonorable and it is getting worse not better.

Should President Bush appoint a military man to be head of the CIA? Of course, because there needs to be cohesive military information and intelligence flows and the CIA is suppose to be operating outside our nation, not from within in political shuffling and one-ups-manship nasty political vendettas. Consider this in 2006.

Firing up your outdoor fire pit

Filed under: Gardeners Shed, Lifestyle Hub — admin at 4:14 am on Tuesday, June 24, 2008

A frustrating task that must be done when cooking with an outdoor fire pit is getting the fire started. Normally you would start by loading the fire pit with wood and allow them to burn down to coals. This is a drawn out process that may take half a day or longer. Instead of wood some individuals may prefer to use charcoal, but it doesn’t require a lot of coals so most people stick with wood and besides wood is cheaper. You will need to burn enough wood to produce about a foot of coals to be most effective and efficient for cooking the meat.

There are other accelerators in the market, to startup your outdoor fire pit, either liquid or solid. It saves a lot of time using them, but there are some downsides. They are highly flammable so they should be handled with care, and also they must add some chemical taste to your cooking.

Before putting the meat in the pit it must be flavored. Some individuals like to flavor their meats with spicy rubs, paprika, salt/pepper/lemon rub, or barbecue sauces the preference is the cooks’. After flavoring the meat it is time to wrap it. When wrapping the meat you must decide what you want to use to wrap it with. There are several products that can be used for this step. Different items that can be used are aluminum foil, banana leaves or large leaves, and wet burlap material.

Things for your Concession Trailer Business

Filed under: Wheely Feelies — admin at 10:38 am on Monday, June 23, 2008

Here’s a few items you’ll need for the following types of concession trailers: hot dogs trailers, refreshments, ice cream, magazine. If you are planning on opening your own business by using a concession trailer there are a few ideas you may like to use, course if you already have your menu ready you are one step ahead of the rest.

For a hot dog concession trailer you will need plenty of hot dogs, buns and condiments. As for which condiments it really depends on how creative you can get. Of course there are your basics, relish, mayo, ketchup and mustard but many like something more. Try to spice things up a bit by adding spicy mustard or try creating your own unique blend. Others will want a sausage instead of your regular hot dog and will pay more for it. If children are around they’d get a kick out of cheese hot dogs, as in the types that already have the cheese inside them.

Try grilling some buns as well as keeping others still in the bag. Don’t forget the chips and soda, maybe a few juice boxes for the younger generation.

A magazine vendor will need a few copies of every magazine you can think of. Your best best is to get those ones that are really popular. Ice cream is easy but you’ll need to have a picture of all the types you offer on the side of your trailer. Good luck with your new business.

The Perfect Little Coffee Shop: Are You Afraid of Failure? Are You Letting that Failure Cripple You

Filed under: Biz — admin at 7:45 pm on Thursday, June 19, 2008

Ah, coffee, the drink of choice when I want to share a special moment with friends, when I want to sit and ponder life or when I want a moment alone. I am an avid coffee drinker. I love coffee and I love the atmosphere of a good coffee house, a café.

And, even if I buy take out coffee, which I do frequently, I like to get my coffee from one of these special cafes.

I often take my two certified therapy dogs with me and go for a ride. I get the coffee, they get a little treat, and off we go. Those are some of my special golden moments of life.

Are you evaluating whether to start or buy a coffee shop & espresso café business?

Well, I was reading through some interesting information on the internet today. And, it taught me a few things as an internet marketer. First, when you are looking for that “niche”, the one that feels right to you, look for ideas in your own “backyard”. Second, when you get the idea, listen to your inner voice and pursue it, don’t say it’s too silly until the numbers tell you its too silly! And third, when the numbers are researched and they look good, go after it!

Have you researched the coffee shop business opportunities and business for sale classifieds looking for that “perfect little coffee shop?”

Are you afraid of failure? Are you letting that failure cripple your chances for success?

Let’s look at this success story. First, how many of you are “knitters”? How many of you share your knitting stories with other knitters? I bet quite a few of you do. How many of you are knitters, and at the same time are open for a business venture? How many are even looking for that special business venture?

Well, here is the success story. I mean, if you are into knitting, how good does this sound? What a great place to get away to for a while, pursue your hobby, and have a social life.

This is the story that caught my eye. Mabel’s Cafe and Knittery offers “knit-wits” a chance to feed their love for knitting and purling in a cozy Southeast coffee shop.

There are brightly colored skeins of yarn in different textures and thicknesses that can actually be purchased in the cafe, along with coffee and locally made pie. Now that part sounds good, even without knitting. There are tables, sofas, and chairs along with knitting books strategically scattered for inspiration.

The owner said, “It was a natural idea for me to mix knitting with other things. I also think that people need more opportunities to be social.” How very true. She was able to incorporate this need into a success story.

Mabel’s Cafe, even offers a variety of knitting workshops for beginners and seasoned pros alike. There are new mothers’ classes, and of course dads are welcome too. Here the parents can socialize and learn to knit while introducing their little ones to the neighbors. What a great idea. Somebody followed their dream.

I did further research on this subject, and here is another success story. The Knitty Gritty Cafe is “a one-stop place for women who love to knit and love the smell and taste of freshly brewed coffee. Whether you are an expert knitter or a beginner, they also sell a variety of products ranging from books to tote bags to a wide selection of yarns”.

Here are some more interesting ideas people have had for coffee shops.

l’Abracadabar
The second Monday of each month: evening aperitif games at the Abracadabar (19th), the biggest free evening of board games in Paris.

les Trois Bornes
The fourth Sunday of each month : round off your Sunday by playing board games at the Trois Bornes café (11th).

Le Cafézoide
If you’ve brought the kids, this is for you: you’ll only find one of its kind in Paris and even in France: a café exclusively reserved for children from 0 to 16 yrs (accompanied by a parent).

It’s the Cafézode, a café where you won’t find alcohol or cigarettes, but a real café nonetheless, with a bar, games, shows, cosy corners and workshops.

So, if this is what you want, and if you have your own “personal niche” well, at least do the research, do the numbers. Who knows, you may come up with a real winner. You too may have your dreams come true. And lets face it, coffee “is where it’s at”.

My Name is Ruth Bird. I have 2 therapy dogs, and I love coffee. I am always impressed by those that have dreams, and follow them. Besides health for pets and people, I am an internet business person.
